The institute of astrophysics hosts a theoretical physics group whose diverse research topics are mainly related to the physics of gravitation. The group has developed an expertise in classical aspects of general relativity (binary compact objects coalescence and gravitational waves), and extensions to modified theories of gravity. Cosmological implications of gravity are studied for both the primordial Universe (inflationary phase) and the recent eras, where structure formation is described with the theory of relativistic cosmological perturbations. The group also works at the interface between astrophysics and particle physics (« astroparticles »), mainly on dark matter and on the acceleration of particles to very high energies from relativistic sources.
